BaSO₄

Barite — Barium Sulfate BaSO₄

Primary weighting material for drilling fluids. Density, grind (API) and contaminants must match the mud programme.

Application

Density control of water-based and oil-based drilling fluids. API-grade barite is specified by specific gravity, particle size and impurity limits; industrial grades are not automatically API-compliant.

Technical characteristics (quality certificate)

Typical values as stated on a mill quality certificate (passport) for a standard commercial grade. Actual lot values are confirmed in the COA / TDS for the selected manufacturer.

Specific gravity

≥ 4.20

API 13A

BaSO₄ content

≥ 90%

API 13A

Water-soluble alkalis (as Ca)

≤ 250 mg/kg

API 13A

Mercury (Hg, max)

≤ 1.0 mg/kg

API 13A

Cadmium (Cd, max)

≤ 3.0 mg/kg

API 13A

Moisture (max)

≤ 1%

Particle size

≥ 97% < 75 µm (API grind)

Reference profile for orientation. For each supply we confirm grade, origin and certificate data against your specification, well conditions and delivery requirements.

Typical functions

  • Mud weight increase
  • Wellbore pressure control support
  • Weighting of selected completion fluids — if specified

Product information

Chemical name
Barium Sulfate
Formula / class
BaSO₄
Appearance
Grey to off-white powder. Colour is not a specification by itself.
Packaging
Typically 1.5 MT jumbo bags or 25/50 kg bags, depending on origin and logistics.

Specific gravity (e.g. 4.10 / 4.20), grind, Hg/Cd and water-soluble alkaline earth metals are producer- and lot-specific. Always request the governing specification (API 13A or customer standard).
