SAS
Sulphonated Asphalt — Shale Stabilizer
Shale stabilizer and high-temperature fluid-loss additive used in water-based muds. Commercial brands differ in sulphonation degree and solubility.
Application
Inhibitive and HT water-based muds for shale stability, lubrication contribution and HTHP fluid-loss control. Not a universal substitute for a named commercial brand without TDS comparison.
Technical characteristics (quality certificate)
Typical values as stated on a mill quality certificate (passport) for a standard commercial grade. Actual lot values are confirmed in the COA / TDS for the selected manufacturer.
HTHP fluid loss (max)
Per grade and test temperature
API RP 13B-2 (HTHP)
Softening point
Per grade
API RP 13I
Loss on drying
≤ 10%
API 13A / Manufacturer TDS
Reference profile for orientation. For each supply we confirm grade, origin and certificate data against your specification, well conditions and delivery requirements.
Typical functions
- Shale stabilization
- HTHP fluid-loss support
- Lubricity contribution
- Filter cake quality
Product information
- Chemical name
- Sulphonated asphalt / shale stabilizer (generic class)
- Formula / class
- SAS
- Appearance
- Dark brown to black powder or granules, manufacturer-dependent.
- Packaging
- Typically 25 kg bags.
Different producers use different sulphonation processes. Products should be compared on solubility, HTHP fluid loss, and compatibility with the existing mud, not on the generic name alone.
